Omek-Umk

״עומק הדיבור عمق الكلام״ (Hebrew and Arabic for Depth of the speech) is a sound work that continues the artists’ work on the relationship between the Arabic and Hebrew languages. At the heart of the work is a love song written in both languages, inspired by Arabic love songs. The Hebrew words, a translation of the Arabic verse, maintain a structural and melodic connection between the two. The song’s music was inspired by phonemic composing traditions identified with traditional Arabic music as well as the piyyut (liturgical hymn) tradition of Arab Jewry. The song was recorded in both languages, after which the Hebrew and Arabic tracks were separated. The individual tracks are played from two horn speakers placed 10-meters away from each other.
