Songs of the Next War

Electronic music producers had been invited to create a contemporary and personal interpretation of Jewish-Arab war songs recorded in Israel during the Six-Day War period (1967). These songs, sung in Jewish-Arabic dialects to Arabic folk tunes, were not included in any of the main collections of Israeli war songs and were forgotten over the years. After being re-discovered, the songs were sampled and processed into new tracks that are published as a music album under the title “Songs of the Next War”. In relation to these musical pieces, The artist had created original video compositions and installations based on personal war archives. The overall project portrays nowadays’ public atmosphere in Israel, where dreams of common reconciliation are confronted with an endless loop of war that the society seems to be trapped in.

As part of Songs of the Next War project, a series of live events is conducted, combining live audio-visual performances and multimedia installations. The events feature live musical sets by Ofer Tisser (Turntables), Yuval Shenhar (vocals), and Aviad Zinemanas (DJ). The three performances are alternately performed from different locations in the venue and slightly overlap. All performances were based on an archive of forgotten Jewish-Arab war songs recorded in Israel during the Six-Day War period (1967). The original records are presented to the public during the events.

The project was developed in a unique process together with the musicians involved: Ofer Tisser, Aviad Zinemanas, Binyamin Oren, Omer Schonberger, Yuval Shenhar, Omer Luz, Eran Feller.  All records were sampled from the collection of Uri ‘Mixmonster’ Wertheim. Videography: Nadav Porat-Chomsky, Stills Photography: Hila Ido.
